SAN ANGELO — Another track meet, another title.
The Blackwell girls are now 7-for-7 after capturing the Region II-1A team championship on Saturday at Angelo State University with 68 points. The Lady Hornets narrowly beat out Benjamin (64) and Water Valley (62) in taking home the prestigious honor.
The foursome of Kiley Cummings, Jordan Jones, Darrian Kenney and Vickie Davis will get to compete for Blackwell at the highest level by advancing to the Class 1A state meet, which is set for May 10-11 in Austin.
Cummings will be in both the triple jump and 400-meter dash after winning both events. She ran the latter event in 1:00.22 and had a triple jump of 35-10 1/2. The sophomore is making her second trip to the state meet, where she missed winning a bronze medal a year ago in the 400 dash by a mere .01 second.
Kenney won the 100-meter hurdles (16.30) and Davis was second in the 800-meter run (2:28.68). Both will be making their first appearances at the state meet.
Jones qualified for state in the pole vault for the third straight year. She had a vault of 9 foot, 3 inches for third place at regionals, then earned a wild-card invitation to Austin by having the best third-place vault from the state's four regions. Jones also narrowly missed winning a third-place bronze medal at Austin last year as she finished fourth in the Class 1A pole vault, and she also placed fourth in the event as a freshman state qualifier.
Blackwell’s Caitlin Lange was third at regionals this year in the 100-meter hurdles (17.29) but did not earn a wild card invitation. The Lady Hornets’ 800- and 1600-meter relays both finished fourth at regionals, while Cummings picked up two of her team-high 24 points by placing fifth in the long jump (15-10 3/4).
Blackwell's 800 relay of Davis, Cirstyn Gober, Madison Solis and Carli Powers had a time of 1:54.02, while the 1600 relay of Cummings, Davis, Gober and Solis recorded a time of 4:22.66.
