Sweetwater High School’s softball team will be going back to the playoffs.
The Lady Mustangs ended their two-game district losing streak in an emphatic way with a 23-4 victory on Friday over San Angelo Lake View at Jerry Collins Softball Complex.
With the win, Sweetwater is also in second place alone with a 3-2 record and three games left in the regular season. Lake View is 0-5.
While Sweetwater trailed 2-0 before coming to bat, it didn’t take long for the Lady Mustangs to seize control of the game with seven runs in the first inning and 11 in the second for an 18-2 lead.
Bri Moriel capped the first-inning outburst with a three-RBI double that also featured RBI singles by Kaci Webb, Tavis Black and Emerald Torres.
The second inning featured two-RBI doubles from Moriel and Torres, who also singled in another run, and Annisa McCollom (double) and Kyla Daniel (single) had RBI hits as well.
The Lady Mustangs’ final runs came on an RBI triple by Torres, who had seven RBIs for the game while Moriel had five RBIs.
Torres went 4-for-4 at the plate to pace a 16-hit Sweetwater attack. Moriel, Daniel, Black, Webb and Kara Lehnert all finished with two. Daniel and Black scored four runs, Torres three, Moriel, Jazzy Villa, Webb and Mia Valdez two and Marlee Hicks, McCollom, Kara Lehnert and Nevaeh Sarabia scored the other runs.
Elli Lehnert pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing eight hits and four runs with five strikeouts.
“I’m proud of the fact that the ladies were focused and took care of business,” said Sweetwater head coach Tim Scherwin, whose team hosts Greenwood on Tuesday. “We need to bring our best at every outing.”
