North Texas wide receiver and former Sweetwater High School athlete Michael Lawrence made a big splash in his second season on the Mean Green football team.
After catching just one pass for 16 yards and seeing limited action his freshman year, Lawrence became a starter for North Texas and had a team-high 62 catches for 819 yards and four touchdowns this past year as a sophomore, earning all-conference honorable mention as the Mean Green won its first-ever Conference USA West Division title. On Dec. 16, the team played in the New Orleans Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, losing to Troy 50-30 to finish with a 9-5 record.
Lawrence was a bowl standout as well, finishing with six catches for 70 yards and a score. Two weeks earlier when the Mean Green played in the C-USA title game against Florida Atlantic, he had six catches for 70 yards in a 41-17 loss. Prior to those losses, North Texas had five straight wins against division foes.
On Oct. 21 in the team’s regular-season game with Florida Atlantic, Lawrence had a career-high 11 catches for 112 yards.
Lawrence made the team as a walk-on after winning all-state honors for Sweetwater where in his final two years the Mustangs won two district titles and were 25-2 overall. As a senior, he caught 73 passes for 1,154 yards and 18 TDs for a 12-1 Sweetwater team that made it to the regional playoffs.
