At least a dozen homes destroyed

According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, the large fire burning in Nolan County that forced many to evacuate their homes on Monday night in Maryneal, has burned over 20,000 acres of land. "Very little of the fire is contained at this point," said Madden. The wind is currently in our favor and the fire is now burning back into itself after winds shifted last night."Madden stated that at least a dozen residences have been destroyed. Approximately 300 Taylor Electric members were without service last night due to the wildfires in the Maryneal and Nolan area. The flames burned Oncor-owned transmission lines leading to a Taylor Electric substation, bringing down power to homes served by that station. Oncor crews say they will enter the wildfire area to repair burned transmission lines when it is determined to be safe. All Taylor Electric Company crews are dispatched to the Maryneal/Nolan area. The only outages to report are those members affected by the downed substation, approximately 300 members, most of whom are evacuated. The fire reportedly crossed Highway 70 North of Blackwell and Highway 70 and Highway 153 were blocked to all traffic due to heavy smoke on Monday evening.
