The Air Race Classic will be holding its 42nd race across the nation in June, 2018. Sherie Alldredge and Paula Carmichael will co-chair this week long event . Sweetwater has been chosen as the Starting line for the race. As Start host, the planning committee is responsible for all aspects of the Start, arrival of the racers and social events preceding the race. Accommodations must be arranged for racers, Judges, ARC Race Officials and FAA Weather Briefer.
The National WASP WWII Museum, in conjunction with its 75th anniversary of the first WASP graduation at Avenger Field, will serve as the conduit for all aspects of the race. Says Alldredge, “This is a huge, week-long event for Sweetwater. About 200 women pilots and race officials are expected to descend upon the community beginning June 12th and ending when the planes take off on Tuesday morning June 19th, 2018.” The planes will make 8 stops before flying into the Terminus airport on June 22, 2018 in Fryeburg, Maine.
Activities are being planned for the women pilots, including an evening of downtown shopping with live music on the street, a chuck wagon dinner, and a bull riding event. A formal banquet will be held on Sunday June 17th for the racers and Air Race Classic officials. In addition, an educational component for area youth will be held on Saturday, June 16th.
