Mayor declares School Board Recognition Month

The Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees were honored with a proclamation at their board meeting on Thursday night by Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham. All across Texas, school districts are honoring their board members this month to commemorate School Board Recognition Month. Thursday's meeting brought the proclamation to the local front. The proclamation cites five different statements, discussing the work of public schools and the local school board members. The public school's mission is to "meet the diverse educational needs of all children, [empowering] them to become competent, productive contributors to a democratic society and an ever-changing world."In comparison, local school board members commit themselves to the belief that children can become "successful learners" by ensuring that top-notch education is "tailored to the individual needs of the child."Secondly, school board members work collaboratively with parents, educational professionals and other members of the community to attain that mission. Additionally, they responsibly work to provide a solid foundation and structure for the local school system. Finally, school board members promote public education as well as "[communicate] the needs of the school district to the public and the public's expectations to the district."The proclamation from the mayor expressed his appreciation to the school board members and proclaimed January 2013 at School Board Recognition Month in Sweetwater."I urge all citizens to join me in recognizing the dedication and hard work of local school board members and in working with them to mold an education system that meets the needs of both today's and tomorrow's children," stated Mayor Wortham. Each school board member was presented with School Board Appreciation gifts at the meeting.
