“I am pleased to announce that Mary Jane Johnson will lead the Amarillo Opera as its third General Director. I would like to personally invite our donors, patrons and the public to support Mary Jane and Amarillo Opera for our upcoming season and this exciting new chapter in our history!” said Roy Bara, President of the Opera’s Board of Directors.
Mary Jane Johnson, a Pampa native, is highly regarded in the Opera World, nationally and internationally, having established herself as one of America’s finest operatic sopranos. Her career spans five continents and features performances with many of the world’s premiere opera companies, including The Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Colon, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Santa Fe Opera. Johnson’s career skyrocketed after appearing with Luciano Pavarotti in the Opera of Philadelphia’s televised performance of La Boheme, singing the role of Musetta. To foster young operatic talent, Ms. Johnson co-founded the Taos Opera Institute and continues to serve as its Artistic Director. She also currently serves on the music faculty at Amarillo College as Artistic Professor.
“The Board of Trustees of Amarillo Opera has great confidence in Ms. Johnson’s vision and leadership of Amarillo Opera and looks forward to continuing the outstanding work of one of Amarillo’s great cultural assets,” added Bara.
