Mustangs eager to bounce back, regain winning ways

After one of the most successful four-year runs in school history — which produced 48 wins and a 2016 trip to the state finals — a very young Sweetwater football team managed just one victory this past season.
But there were encouraging signs along the way. After scoring just 21 points in their four non-district games, the Mustangs had 158 in their six district contests, averaging over 26 points per outing.
Sweetwater wrapped up its year with close losses to playoff teams Fort Stockton (23-36) and Monahans (34-41 in overtime). It narrowly missed a chance to deny the Loboes the No. 4 berth out of District 1-4A, despite a roster with five freshmen and 18 underclassmen.
Those players are a year older now, and third-year head coach Ben McGehee is counting on them — along with several members of last year’s JV squad — to lead a Mustang revival.
