Netters earn 5-4A honors

A number of Sweetwater tennis players were recently honored for their play with all-district recognition in 5-4A with first team recognition in both doubles and singles.
The boys doubles team of Jacob Roden and Max Berry received first team honors as did the mixed doubles team of Lily Smola and Austin Ramirez.
First team all-district recognition also went to four boys players in singles including Roden, Berry and Ramirez as well as Calen Hughes.
Madyson Gilmore in girls singles earned second team all-district recognition as did the boys doubles team of Matthew Pena and Nathan Humphries.
Isaiah Pena and Brody Frieda received all-district honorable mention both as a boys doubles team and individually in boys singles. Also getting all-district honorable mention was Samantha Magee in girls singles. This year’s tennis team became the first during the UIL era to advance to the playoffs.
Under first-year coach John Loyd, the team earned the No. 3 district seed out of 5-4A before losing its bi-district match.
