IOWA PARK — The odds were stacked against Sweetwater for Game 1 of its best-of-3 bi-district series with Iowa Park on Thursday.
Iowa Park — with homefield advantage and a No. 3 state ranking — lived up to its reputation with an 11-0 victory in five innings. On Saturday, Sweetwater will try to stay alive as the series moves to McMurry University in Abilene for Game 2 and a Game 3, if needed.
Krystian Gomez was the only Mustang to reach base Thursday with a first-inning single. Iowa Park (26-2) was scoreless in the second inning but had three runs in the first and third and five in the fourth to end the game early.
Hawks pitcher Chris Dickens hurled a five-inning, one-hit shutout while fanning 10. He had two of his team’s 11 hits as well including a triple, and with three RBIs.
For Sweetwater, Gomez pitched 3.2 innings until Mathew Hernandez came in to get the last out.
