Now the fun really begins

It’s almost November and that means the district races are heating up for our area high school football teams.
Tonight, Seminole visits Sweetwater in a first-place showdown in District 2-4A, Division II between a pair of teams who have faced few serious obstacles so far. It also marks the return of ex-coach Kent Jackson to Sweetwater, which still has to face two more tough foes in Monahans and Midland Greenwood. Sweetwater and Seminole last met in the Region I finals with Sweetwater winning 38-14.
There is a similar situation in District 4-2A, Division II, where Roscoe travels to Seagraves in a matchup of teams who met last year in the Region I semifinals — with Seagraves winning 29-21 to avenge a regular-season loss.
And Roscoe still has to play Hamlin, last year’s 4-2A champion, to end the regular season. Roscoe and Hamlin are both 2-0 while Seagraves is 1-1.
Another anticipated game happens in two weeks when Blackwell visits Highland in District 7-1A, Division II. Blackwell hosts Loraine and Highland welcomes Trent when district play finally kicks off tonight.
Tonight provides a chance for first-year coach Ben McGehee’s Mustangs to make a statement with a win over what will be by far the best team they have faced this year. Sweetwater beat Seminole in both the regular season and playoffs in 2016, but the Indians are still likely to give the Mustangs a serious challenge. And there’s still next week’s trip to Monahans, which won the district championship last year as a result of its 19-16 victory over Sweetwater at Mustang Bowl, plus always-tough Midland Greenwood at home Nov. 10 to end the regular season.
If Roscoe beats Seagraves, its game with Hamlin — also on Nov. 10 — likely decides the winner of 4-2A, D-II.
The night before that will pit Blackwell at Highland in their 7-1A, D-II finale. Expect both teams to come in with 2-0 district records.
As the headline says, now the fun really begins.
