Powerlifters start out at Miles

Sweetwater High School’s boys and girls powerlifters compete at their first 2012 meet on Saturday at Miles.SHS will also have joint meets Jan. 19 at Big Spring, Feb. 9 at Clyde and Feb. 18 when Sweetwater hosts the final qualifying meet. Also, the boys go to Abilene High Jan. 28 and the girls will compete at Grape Creek on Feb. 4. Regional meets are March 3 at Monahans (girls) and March 10 at Sundown (boys), while the state meets are March 17 at Corpus Christi (girls) and March 24 in Abilene (boys).Little League signups will begin MondaySignups for Sweetwater Little League begin Monday, Jan. 16 for T-ball (ages 4-6) from 6-8 p.m. at the Sweet-water Intermediate School cafeteria. Signups for Farm League (ages 7-8) and Minor League (ages 9-10) will be Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at the SIS cafeteria. Signups for Major League (ages 11-12), Junior League (ages 13-14) and Senior League (ages 15-16) will be on Thursday, Jan. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the SIS cafeteria. For those who miss any ofthe scheduled signup dates, the league has scheduled open signups for Friday, Jan. 27 from 6-8 p.m. at the SIS cafeteria. The cost per player is as follows: T-ball, $45 plus $10 concession (opt out for fundraiser is $20 or sell at least seven items); Farm League, Minor League and Minor League, $60 plus $10 concession (opt out for fundraiser is $20 or sell at least seven items); Junior and Senior League, $95 (including the opt out for fundraiser). Those wishing to participate are asked to save empty aluminum cans to donate to the association. Empty cans, crushed or not crushed, should be brought to the bin located in front of The Water Jug at 920 E. 15th Street, across from Trinity Baptist Church. Can donations will be cashed in to help offset costs during the 2012 softball season.
