ROBY — Class 1A Roby took advantage of Class 4A Sweetwater’s foul trouble to rally in the fourth quarter of Friday’s non-district game at Roby’s gym and record a 67-59 win over the Lady Mustangs.
Sweetwater (4-13) took a 53-51 lead on a pair of free throws by Tavis Black with 4:06 left to play. But Roby then went ahead on a 3-pointer by Kolbi Helm, sparking a 10-0 run that put the Lady Lions — who are ranked No. 13 in 1A — ahead to stay.
Sweetwater lost two of its top players, Jessica Poe and Shavie Green, to fouls in the second half.
Poe, who had 14 points, picked up her fifth foul late in the third quarter. Green, who had eight points and like Poe was a force on the boards, left with 5:31 to play with Sweetwater leading 51-47. With those two out, Roby ended the game on a 20-8 run to salvage a win.
The Lady Lions led for most of the game and they held a 9-6 lead after the opening period. Sweetwater stayed close, though, and the Lady Mustangs ended the half on a 6-0 run to tie the contest at 24. Black — who was Sweetwater’s top scorer with 24 points — gave the Lady Mustangs their first lead of the second half (40-39) with 2:30 left in the third quarter and Poe made it 42-39 seconds later until getting her fifth foul.
Sweetwater, which hosts Lubbock Estacado Tuesday, also got five points by Kyla Daniel, four points from Jazzy Villa and two each by Nevaeh Sarabia and Kierstyn Thompson. Tuesday’s game is the team’s last until it goes to Anson for a tournament Dec. 27-29.
