Roscoe, Highland pick up wins

Roscoe kicked off District 7-1A, Division II play with a 14-0 win over Baird’s Bears on Friday. The big news? Not only was it the team’s first win, but also Roscoe’s first victory since late in the 2010 season. Roscoe (1-3) got touch-downs from Eduardo Gal-legos and Vincent Pantoja, and the defense shut down Baird (1-3) to complete the victory. The Bears finished with just 157 yards.Pantoja gave the Plowboys a 6-0 lead when he scored on a 16-yard run in the first quarter.Roscoe’s lead held up until halftime, and Gallegos then provided some insur-ance points early in the third quarter with a 60-yard touchdown run of his own. Cutter Davila’s two-point run made it 14-0 and Ros-coe held on for the win, ending a losing streak that had reached 14 games.Roscoe finished with the night with 158 yards rushing, including 89 by Galle-gos on 14 carries and 38 on nine attempts by Pantoja to lead the way. Also, Pantoja had nine solo tackles and eight assists to lead Roscoe’s defensive effort. Estaban Benivamondez had nine solo tackles and four assists, and Rafael Pantoja finished the night with eight solo tackles and six assisted stops against the Bears. Roscoe hosts Cross Plains this Friday.Highland 30, Trent 25The good times continue for Highland, which won its third straight game while improving its season record to 3-2 thanks to a dramatic fourth-quarter, 12-yard touchdown run from Ron Covington on the final play to overcome a 25-24 deficit and hand previously-unbeaten Trent its first loss in five contests.Highland was out-gained by Trent 242-213, but won thanks to Covington (80 yards rushing, three touch-downs), plus Michael Hyde (79 yards, 13 carries) and Shelby Howard, who also scored against Trent and finished with 32 yards on seven carries. Highland scored first on a 21-yard run by Covington, but three straight Trent touchdowns put the Gorillas up 23-8 in the early part of the third quarter before the Hornets rallied. Covington’s second TD on a 10-yard run cut Trent’s lead to 23-16 and Highland finally regained the lead later in the period on a 5-yard TD run by Howard, plus Hyde’s kick. Trent took a 25-24 lead with a safety before Covington scored his final touchdown of the night on Highland’s last possession.Howard was in on 16 tackles and recovered a fumble to lead the defense.Blanket 52, Blackwell 44Blackwell (2-3) suffered its second straight close loss and once again the Hornets had a lead at the end of the third quarter only to see it slip away. Jayden Jones had four rushing touchdowns for Blackwell, which enjoyed a four-point lead (38-34) at the end of three quarters.However, the Hornets were outscored 18-6 in the fourth quarter. Jones had 231 yards rushing for Black-well, which also got touchdowns from Franck Cano and Ted Chambliss.Chambliss scored on a pass reception from quarterback Ethan Andrews, who completed 9 of 17 attempts for 114 yards. Chambliss caught two passes for 40 yards while Mark Monroe and Jones both had three catches for 37 and 32 yards, respectively. Jones also had a team-high 16 tackles, sev-en unassisted, for Blackwell plus a fumble recovery. Other top defenders in the game for the Hornets were Mason Magness with five solo tackles and nine assisted stops; and Cano and Kaleb Edwards with six solos and four assists. Cano also recovered a fumble.
