April was a very good month for Roscoe track athletes Jayden Gonzales and Bonnie Wilkinson.
The two seniors not only qualified to compete in the Class 2A state meet, but they also set school records.
Gonzales set his record of 14 foot, 3 inches in the pole vault when he competed at the District 7-2A/8-2A area meet held April 10. In doing so he broke a 26-year-old record of 14-0 set in 1993 by Shae Sanford.
Gonzales’ vault qualified him for regionals, where he vaulted 13-3 to tie for the best height and qualify for the state meet that will be held May 10-11 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Gonzales had to settle for a second-place silver medal after losing a jump-off with Theron Allen of Cross Plains, who also went 13-3 at regionals.
Wilkinson, meanwhile, soared 37-5 1/2 in the girls triple jump at regionals this past weekend in earning her trip to the state meet.
Wilkinson, who won her event, broke her previous school mark of 36-11 1/2 set in 2017 when she won a gold medal in the event at the state meet.
Wilkinson and Gonzales are among seven area athletes at state this year, joining Blackwell’s Kiley Cummings (Class 1A girls triple jump and 400 dash), Vickie Davis (Class 1A girls 800 run), Peyton Hinckley (Class 1A boys high jump), Jordan Jones (Class 1A girls pole vault) and Darian Kenney (Class 1A girls 100 hurdles).
