Trailing 4-2 as it came to bat in the fifth inning of Friday’s final non-district softball game with Andrews, Sweetwater scored six runs to take an 8-4 lead and held on for a 9-6 win at the Jerry Collins Complex.
The Lady Mustangs (11-4-1) led 1-0 after two innings, but Andrews scored twice in the third and fifth innings to go ahead. However, that set the stage for a six-run explosion that put Sweetwater up for good.
The Lady Mustangs added a final run in the sixth after Andrews scored twice in the top of the inning, then won by holding the visitors scoreless in the seventh.
Sonora Medellin’s bases-loaded double regained the lead for Sweetwater in the fifth inning after Kara Lehnert led off with a walk and Bri Moriel and Blake Bewley singled. A double by Emerald Torres scored Medellin and the final blow came on Tavis Black’s two-run homer to center field.
Elli Lehnert singled to start the Lady Mustangs’ sixth and her courtesy runner, Shavie Green, scored on a double by Bewley to provide the final margin of victory for Sweetwater.
Medellin’s sacrifice fly scored the first run and she tripled and scored the second run on Torres’ RBI single in the fourth. Kara Lehnert got the victory on the mound after pitching five innings before Elli Lehnert relieved and threw the last two.
The Lady Mustangs begin district this Friday.
