Sweetwater’s girls scored 24 points to win the team title at the season-opening powerlifting meet Thursday in Big Spring, beating out Colorado City (23 points) and Big Spring (22).The Sweetwater boys also went to Big Spring and fin-ished with 22 points for fourth place. Lake View won the division with 45 points.The only weight class winner for the Sweetwater girls was Nay Gonzales, who lifted a total of 560 pounds in the 220-pound class.However, two Sweetwater athletes placed second in their divisions — Alexis Thompson in the 114-pound class (450 pounds) and Valeria Zavaleta in the 123-pound class (500 pounds). Thompson was also third (99.52) in the bench press for lifters in the 97-to-165-pound classes. Also for Sweetwater, Tier-ra Brown was third in the 132-pound class (470 pounds) and Mikki Reschman was third in the 148-pound class (615 pounds). Kristi Ward got the other team point by placing fifth in the 148-pound class with a total lift of 580 pounds.For Sweetwater’s boys, the only individual weight class winner at Big Spring was Donald Baker, who won the 148-pound class by lifting 980 pounds. Jay Lomas (840) was second in the 132-pound class; Kendall Rea (1,130) was third in the 242-pound class; and Trey Harvey (815) in the 148-pound class and Steven Le (955) in the 165-pound class were fourth. Three athletes were fifth — Brett Ashley (295) in the 114-pound class, Max Nemir (765) in the 148-pound clss and Austin Marlett (1,010) in the 181-pound class.Both Sweetwater teams will compete again Saturday at Dublin, as well at Abil-ene Cooper on Feb. 1 and Clyde on Feb. 7. Sweetwater’s teams will then host their own meet, the annual Arlon Barnes Classic, on Feb. 14 and the boys have a final qualifying meet on Feb. 23 at Hawley.The regional meet for the girls will be March 2 at Fort Stockton and the boys will have their regional meet the following week, March 9, at Sundown. The girls’ regional qualifiers will go to Corpus Christi March 16 for their state meet while the boys’ regional qualifiers are in Abilene for their state meet, which is scheduled for March 23.
