SHS spikers split six matches at SA

Sweetwater High School’s varsity volleyball team won three of its six matches over the weekend at San Angelo’s two-day tournament.The Lady Mustangs, who are 9-7, will host Graham and Breckenridge Tuesday before a one-week break.On Friday, Sweetwater faced three teams — Water Valley, Andrews and San Angelo Central — in pool play and had a 1-2 record. It started out with a 25-20, 25-20 win Friday vs. Water Valley, but lost to Andrews 15-25, 25-21, 17-25 and to San Angelo Central 10-25, 15-25, sending them into the Bronze Division brack-et. Sweetwater fared better, though, in bracket play with a 2-1 record, the only loss against Odessa High by a 23-25, 24-26 score. The Lady Mustangs won 25-16, 25-15 over Sterling City and also defeated Presidio 25-11, 25-15 in their final match on Saturday.In its pool play win against Water Valley, Sweetwater got nine kills from Mikeilah Foust and five from Kensi Chowning along with 21 digs from Morgan Gomez. Foust also had eight kills against Andrews and four against San Angelo Central. Laura Jones had six kills vs. Andrews and Gomez 21 digs vs. Andrews as well. Maddie Berry also finished with 13 digs in that match and Foust led the team in blocks with four, while Maddie Jones had 10 kill assists for Sweetwater.Against Sterling City in the team’s first bracket match Saturday, the team’s straight-set victory was led by Foust and Berry each with five kills while Kaitlyn Foster, Lauren Jones and Chowning all collected three kills. Maddie Jones had 11 assists and Sarah Valdez nine for Sweetwater.Against Odessa High, Chowning led with six kills while Berry and Abby Gar-cia each had four kills and Foust three. Gomez and Rhylee Meneses had four digs while Chowning had three blocks to earn team honors, while Maddie Jones had nine assists.Against Presidio, Chown-ing led the team with eight kills and also had three aces and two blocks.Foust added four kills and one block while Foster and Lauren Jones had three kills, Berry two and Katie Fox one. Maddie Jones had 12 kill assists and Valdez seven, and they combined for seven aces in the match. Fox had three digs and Gomez two, with two aces.
