ROSCOE — Stamford trailed Roscoe 29-26 in the third quarter of Friday’s non-district Class 2A battle, but the visiting Bulldogs did not allow the home team to score again on their turf as they took a closer-than-it-sounds 53-29 win at Plowboy Field.
The game see-sawed back and forth from the start until Roscoe took its last lead at 6:11 of the third stanza on a 1-yard TD run by Nick Limones and two-point Jose Ortega PAT run.
Stamford went ahead to stay at 33-29 less than a minute later on a 9-yard TD run by Peyton Bevel and PAT kick, then gradually put the game out of reach with three Bevel TD passes. He threw for six scores in all.
It was tied 7-7 after one quarter. Roscoe led 21-20 at halftime after a 2-point PAT run by Stamford failed following a TD catch to end the first half. Stamford outscored Roscoe 33-8 in the second half to improve to 2-0, while Roscoe fell to 0-2.
Limones scored his first TD on a 1-yard run and Ortega’s kick tied it at 7-7. Limones then added a 3-yard TD run and Ortega’s kick tied it 14-14. Barrett Beal’s 14-yard pass to Junior Martinez gave Roscoe the lead, 21-14.
Limones finished with 157 yards on 32 runs. Ortega (7 for 81), Martinez (5, 49) and Brandon Lavalais (5,32) were the leading receivers and Beal was 20-of-33 passing for 170 yards to lead Roscoe offensively. On defense, Ortega had nine solo tackles, Limones eight and Gary Shaw six. The Plowboys host Miles (homecoming) in their next game that will kick off at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.
