A 3-point avalanche from visiting Brownwood at Mustang Gym ultimately did in the Sweetwater girls basketball team Friday.
Brownwood (4-2 in District 5-4A) connected on 13 shots from long range against the Lady Mustangs in a 62-44 win. The 15th-ranked Lady Lions led all the way, helped by a 15-1 start prior to Sweetwater’s first field goal. Brownwood’s first 21 points of the game came on seven 3s; Mallory Garcia, who had a game-high 32 points, made four of them. But Sweetwater (1-4) didn’t go away despite that early onslaught of 3-pointers by the Lady Lions.
Brownwood saw an early 15-point lead shrink to six late in the first quarter, and to four (33-29) at halftime as the Lady Mustangs started to hit 3s of their own to get back into the game.
It was still a seven-point contest until Brownwood pulled away with a 10-0 run in the third quarter to take a 54-37 lead. Sweetwater was unable to counter after that decisive move. The Lady Mustangs stayed in fourth place in district but lost ground to both Brownwood and Snyder (3-2), as well as first-place Wylie (6-0).
Sweetwater, which goes to 0-6 Big Spring Tuesday, got 13 points from Amber Knox and 11 by Jessica Poe. Tavis Black had six, Shavie Green five, and Kyla Daniel, Jazel Villa and Nevaeh Sarabia three points each.
