STEM camps underway

TSTC Sweetwater is hosting six summer camps this week, June 3-6, for students entering the fourth through seventh grades. All camps work closely with the STEM mind set of teaching science, technology, engineering and math.  Basic Robotics (9 a.m. to noon)Get started with NXT programming in the special LEGO NXT LabView environment. This includes:• Concepts of structure: static force, torque, stress and strain;• Basic building techniques;• Upload/Download with the NXT module;• Basic movement instructions;• Concepts of programming: loops and switches;• Using "Switch" to respond to inputs;• Simple loops. Advanced Robotics (9 a.m. to noon)Automating NXT robot motion. This includes:• Basic building techniques;• Advanced building techniques;• Recording macros to repeat a given set of instructions;• Setting up each of the main sensor types: (ultrasound, microphone, optical, and pushbutton);• Using switches/loops to control behavior;• Concepts of automation in industry. Math Track (9 a.m. to noon)Kids will participate in fun, hands on activities involving both, new and familiar, math skills. They will also incorporate these skills into real world applications, such as the wind energy and nursing programs at TSTC. Art Track (1-4 p.m.)Discover your artistic side and be inspired to create your own masterpieces in lots of fun materials. Build it, sketch it and cover it in paint this summer. Also discover the arts through imaginative games, activities and art making.Medical Track (1-4 p.m.)Explore the world of medicine to find out where your interests lie in the healthcare profession and what you can do to achieve your educational and professional goals. Students get hands-on-training in CPR/first aid along with the opportunity to visit Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and Sweetwater Fire Department.Technology Track (1-4 p.m.)Get your tech on! Participants will learn and experience a variety of technology skills including using iPADS, digital cameras, jump drives and Microsoft Office programs. They will also visit the Technology and Communication department at TSTC.Texas State Technical College System ( consists of four technical schools: TSTC Harlingen, TSTC Marshall, TSTC Waco, and TSTC West Texas, which has campuses in Abilene, Breckenridge, Brownwood, and Sweetwater. TSTC colleges rank consistently as top colleges in the state and nation for conferring associate degrees in engineering, precision production, computer information systems degrees, communication and information sciences, and enrollment of Hispanic students. More than 17,000 students attend TSTC each year in credit programs alone, and that number grows to nearly 30,000 when short-term continuing education and corporate training programs are included.
