A loss at home in its final regular-season match on Tuesday was not exactly the ending Sweetwater wanted.
But the Lady Mustangs can thank two earlier wins for getting them the No. 3 seed in the Class 4A volleyball playoffs that begin next week. Sweetwater and Big Spring both finished 3-5 in District 5-4A, but Sweetwater — by virtue of its two wins over the Lady Steers — is seeded higher.
Wylie (8-0) is the No. 1 seed and Brownwood (4-4) finished as the No. 2 seed from the district.
Bit Spring eliminated Snyder (2-6) on Tuesday with a 3-0 match win to get the No. 4 playoff berth out of 5-4A.
Monahans won 3-0 on Tuesday against Sweetwater by scores of 25-18, 25-18, 27-25 in a non-district match at Mustang Gym. Sweetwater led 16-10 in Game 3 only to see the visitors mount a late rally and wrap up a straight-set victory. Sonora Medellin had a team-high 17 digs for the Lady Mustangs while Jessica Poe and Charity Thompson tied for team honors with eight kills and Elli Lehnert had 13 assists plus three kills, 11 digs and one ace. Hannah Mobley had three kills, eight digs and one block; Shavie Green had three kills and three digs; Mia Valdez had one ace, one dig and nine assists; Marissa Villanueva had five digs; Poe also had three digs and one block; Riley Dodd had one kill and one assist; and Sadie Fish had one dig. Thompson also had one dig and Medellin also had one ace. Poe, Fish and Medellin, who are seniors, played their last home matches on Tuesday.
Sweetwater is scheduled to play either Burkburnett or Vernon early next week in the bi-district playoffs.
