This time there was no overtime period. No last-second heroics. Just a rather workman-like 58-30 win for Sweetwater over an 0-5 Lake View team Tuesday at Mustang Gym, clinching a playoff spot in District 5-4A for the Lady Mustangs.
Tavis Black — whose last-second layup in the teams’ first district meeting back on Jan. 4 salvaged a 45-44 win — led the charge again Tuesday. She poured in 24 points as Sweetwater im-proved to 3-2 in district with three games left. The team hosts Greenwood (4-0) on Friday, visits Snyder (3-1) on Jan. 29 and entertains Big Spring (1-4) to wrap up the regular season Feb. 1.
Shavie Green was also a force on Tuesday with 15 points and a big game for Sweetwater on the boards.
Amber Knox had seven points and the Lady Mustangs’ other two starters, Kyla Daniel and Kierstyn Thompson, each tossed in six points to account for all of the team’s scoring.
Sweetwater led 9-4 after the first quarter, 22-12 at intermission and 42-23 as it entered the fourth stanza.
All five starters scored in a 14-5 run at the end of the third period. The Lady Mustangs (11-16 overall) go into Friday’s contest with two straight victories that have been by an average of 30 points. Head coach Sarah Johnson wants the wins to keep coming.
“I know we can (keep on winning) if we play to our potential,” she said.
“I hope we have a better atmosphere Friday than we did against Greenwood the first time (a 54-51 loss Jan. 8 at Greenwood). Tonight we stayed out of foul trouble. Overall I thought we played a lot better against Lake View than we did the first time.
“We were quicker on defense and made better decisions on offense. I feel like we’re getting back to where we’re at the level that we need to play. I know that we can win the next three games if we play to our full potential.”
The two 5-4A losses have been by a total of six points to Greenwood and Snyder, which won 46-43 on Jan. 11.
