Their 1-2 start isn’t ideal, but Sweetwater — despite its youth — has improved noticeably from last season’s 1-9 debacle.
The first three games of the 2019 season underscore that fact when compared to the 2018 results.
The one victory so far (48-27) came on the road at Big Spring, which was a 33-7 winner last season at Mustang Bowl.
In their two defeats — 49-27 to Cisco and 70-41 to Wichita Falls Hirschi — the Mustangs were competitive, something that couldn’t be said in 2018 when Sweetwater lost 56-7 and 51-7, respectively, to the Loboes and the Huskies.
The Mustangs get another stiff exam this Friday at Iowa Park (2-1) to wrap up non-district play. Sweetwater lost a 41-0 decision to a Hawks squad that advanced to the 4A, D-II state semifinals in 2018.
