Despite having just eight players, Sweetwater is in the playoffs for the third consecutive season in boys basketball.
And the team had even fewer in its most recent game when the Mustangs clinched the No. 2 spot in District 5-4A this past Tuesday with a regular-season ending 53-41 win at Brownwood.
It’s quality, not quantity, that has Sweetwater meeting Graham today at Anson High School in the bi-district round of the playoffs starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Sweetwater-Graham matchup is the second game of a doubleheader.
The first game of the twinbill pits Brownwood against Burkburnett. That game is schedued to tip off at 6 p.m.
Sweetwater did just fine with seven players when the Mustangs won last week at Brownwood to complete a sweep of their two-game series and claim the No. 2 spot in 5-4A.
J.L. Solis scored a team-high 20 points and Sweetwater led from start to end against the Lions, who had the same record (4-4) but are the No. 3 playoff team.
Graham is the No. 3 team from District 6-4A and is similar to Sweetwater in a couple of ways, according to head coach Bryan Loera.
“They're patient on offense like us and also guard oriented,” said Loera, whose team has gotten most of its scoring production this year from Solis and another senior guard, Kobe Clark. “I feel like our guards will be a good matchup for them, but we have to keep them off the boards.”
Sweetwater will add two players to its roster from the JV to give the Mustangs a little more bench strength tonight against Graham.
