GRAFORD — For the first three innings, Sweetwater’s Kara Lehnert matched zeros with her counterpart on the pitching mound, Vernon’s Shay Williams, in Class 4A bi-district softball playoff action on Wednesday.
But the Lady Lions broke through to score four runs in the fourth in advancing to the area playoff round with a 7-0 victory.
Sweetwater was held to just three hits by Williams, who fanned 16 in seven innings for a complete game shutout. Williams also gave up four walks to the Lady Mustangs, who threatened in the first and fifth innings but failed to score.
Sweetwater began by putting runners at second and third after Bri Moriel and Tavis Black both walked in the first inning. However, Williams fanned the next two hitters to end the threat.
In the fifth, Blayke Bewley tripled for the Lady Mustangs with two outs but was left stranded after another strikeout ended the inning.
Vernon’s fourth started with with an Avery Kinney home run, one of five hits in the inning. Vernon got a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Elli Lehnert threw the last two innings.
Coach Tim Scherwin said he knew his team would be facing a tough challenge.
“I know that these kids, both together and individually, have the ability to step up,” he said. “This is a group that has demonstrated they can handle a great deal of adversity.
“We came together for a reason,” Scherwin continued. “It’s not the result we wanted, but these kids are prepared for the challenges that come at them. I am proud to lead them.”
Bewley had two of the team’s three hits including a two-out single in the seventh, and Annisa McCollom singled in the sixth.
