SW teams need W today

Sweetwater sends its volleyball and football teams to Midland Greenwood today in what will be crucial con-tests for both squads. In both cases, a win gives Sweetwater a major boost toward the postseason while a loss would represent a big setback, especially for the Mustang football team that is looking for its first win in district play.In fact, both Sweetwater and Greenwood’s football teams seek their first win in district after losing their 4-3A openers last week to Snyder and Monahans, re-spectively. The Mustangs lost 41-14, and the Rangers lost their game to Monahans by a near-identical score — 42-14 — last Friday.Sweetwater had a season-low point total in its loss to Snyder, but still trailed just 21-14 until the host Tigers took advantage of turnovers in the second half to score the last 20 points. The Mustangs will be out to end a three-game slide after starting out the season 2-1, and also do a better job of protecting the ball after 11 turnovers in that time. QB Kaegan Jeffrey will also try to extend his streak of throwing at least one TD pass in every game so far, though he had just one against Snyder. The Sweetwater-Green-wood winner could be in a tie for second place after tonight, depending on the outcome of the other con-tests. Wylie (1-0) is at Mon-ahans (1-0) while Snyder (1-0) will be visiting Big Spring (0-1) in the other district games. After today, Sweetwater will host Big Spring next week before facing perhaps its two toughest games in district play — a Nov. 1 game at Monahans followed by the 4-3A finale on Nov. 8, when Sweetwater will play host to Wylie. Greenwood still has to play Wylie, Big Spring and Snyder.Sweetwater’s volleyball team is 2-4 in 4-3A after losing to Monahans in three games here Tuesday. The Lady Loboes never trailed as they won by scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-13 over the Lady Mustangs. Sweet-water’s loss came four days after the team beat Snyder in four games this past Fri-day to take outright control of fourth place.Sweetwater leads Snyder (1-5) by a game in the 4-3A standings and Greenwood (0-6) by two games with four remaining in the race for the final playoff spot. Sweetwater trails Big Spring (4-2), which is currently in third place, by two games. After today, Sweetwater hits the road again Tuesday to face Wylie (6-0), which leads Monahans (5-1) by a game heading into the teams’ showdown today in Monahans. The Lady Mustangs play their last two games — vs. Big Spring on Oct. 25 and Snyder on Oct. 29 — at home.
