Sweetwater won consolation honors at Monahans’ softball tournament while competing Saturday in the Silver Bracket.
The team won three of five games in all and is 4-2 for the season.
Sweetwater finished with a 1-2 record in pool play Friday when the Lady Mustangs began the tournament, then took consolation honors on Saturday by beating Presidio and Grape Creek.
Sweetwater’s pool also included Fort Stockton, Presidio and Fabens. The Lady Mustangs beat Presidio 12-2 but lost to Fabens (2-7) and Fort Stockton (7-10) in pool play.
Sweetwater’s highlights in its two consolation bracket wins Saturday included home runs by Victoria Neri and Kaci Webb vs. Presidio in the consolation semifinals and a Tavis Black home run and diving outfield catch by Blayke Bewley vs. Grape Creek in the consolation finals.
Other top contributors were Kyla Daniel, Marlee Hicks, Elli Lehnert, Kara Lehnert, Annisa McCollom, Bri Moriel, Faith Santiago, Nevaeh Sarabia, Emerald Torres, Mia Valdez, Sara Vera and Jazzy Villa.
"Friday was ugly as we battled defensive issues and struggled in a tough West Texas wind," coach Tim Scherwin said.
"It was great to see us respond (to the challenge) on Saturday," the first-year mentor added. "Our offense clicked, our pitchers were hitting their spots and the defense really stepped up. (The) contributions came from all over. I really like how each kid fits into a role, which allows us to succeed as a team. We have some depth and versatility, which is key."
This week is another busy one for Sweetwater, which today will travel to Abernathy for a varsity game at 5:30 p.m. The varsity and JV teams host Abilene Cooper on Tuesday before going to Abilene's Ice Breaker Tournament on Thursday through Saturday.
