The USG plant in Sweetwater welcomed the USG Corporation Board of Directors for a tour and meeting on Thursday, March 22. Nine members of the Board, including CEO Jennifer Scanlon, spent a full day observing the plant’s operations and meeting with employees.
The USG gypsum plant opened in Sweetwater in 1923 and currently employs more than 250 people, producing well-known building products like USG Sheetrock® brand drywall. The plant also produces many of USG’s newest products like Sheetrock® EcoSmart Panels, which are manufactured with a revolutionary process that uses 25 percent less water and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent.
“USG is an industry-leading manufacturer with deep roots in places like Sweetwater,” says plant manager Jeff Grimland. “We are a sophisticated manufacturing operation, a safe employer and a proud member of the community. It’s an honor to welcome our Board of Directors and demonstrate the expertise and capabilities of our plant.”
On the tour, the group viewed a controlled blast in the quarry and the process that prepares the gypsum to be made into building supplies like drywall. Sweetwater employees demonstrated the plant’s shipping capabilities for both trucks and rail cars, and led discussions about the plant’s training, development and efficiency programs.
