Sweetwater and Roscoe begin their girls playoff runs today in District 5-4A and District 8-2A, respectively.
Sweetwater — under its first-year coach Sarah Johnson — is the No. 3 seed out of its district after losing to Snyder, 52-37, on Friday in a tiebreaker at Anson.
Blackwell begins its run at 8 p.m. Tuesday as it faces Rochelle at Valera Panther Creek in bi-district.
Sweetwater (13-18) faces Graham (19-11) at 7:30 p.m. today at Breckenridge High School in bi-district. Graham was the No. 2 seed in District 6-4A this season.
Tavis Black had 12 points for the Lady Mustangs in their loss to the Lady Tigers and Shavie Green 11. Sweetwater has made the playoffs in each of the past three seasons.
However, this is Roscoe’s first playoff trip since 2014. The Plowgirls (17-11) are the No. 4 seed from 8-2A with a 3-6 record, and were in a tough district (Haskell, Albany, Stamford, Hawley and Cross Plains). Roscoe was just 12-42 the last two seasons combined.
Tonight, they will take on Christoval (22-10) at 6:30 at Bronte. Christoval is the No. 1 seed from 7-2A.
Shella Arnwine, Roscoe’s head coach, got two move-ins this season in Sadie and Shauna McCambridge who are both full-time starters. Sadie, a junior, starts at point guard and her sister Shauna — who is just a freshman — is at post where she averages seven points, four blocks and 13 rebounds a game. Sadie averages six points, four assists and three steals. Guard Bonnie Wilkinson is Roscoe’s leading scorer with an 11-point average this season. Guard Victoria Martinez is averaging nine points. Veronica Cuellar and Jaci Alexander are other key performers.
