MIDLAND — Leaving no doubt, Sweetwater crushed Midland Christian 18-0 in four innings in a run-rule, non-district win for the Lady Mustang softball team on Monday.
Sweetwater — which will return to district action on Friday when the Lady Mustangs host San Angelo Lake View — scored at least three runs in all four innings and bashed out 15 hits against Midland Christian.
Meanwhile, their pitcher — Kara Lehnert — allowed just one hit, which didn’t come until the fourth inning with a two-out double spoiling her bid for a no-hitter.
Lehnert finished with seven strikeouts and one walk and allowed just three Midland Christian baserunners. The senior struck out the first five batters of the contest and the only time she had any trouble came when the first two batters in the third inning both reached base on a walk and an error, before she retired the next three hitters to end the home team’s threat.
Sweetwater was led on offense by Tavis Black and Marlee Hicks with three hits apiece while Blayke Bewley, Bri Moriel and Jazzy Villa all had two hits and Emerald Torres, Lehnert and Nevaeh Sarabia one.
Black, Lehnert, Sarabia, Torres and Villa doubled. Black had three RBI, Bewley two and and Moriel, Hicks, Villa, Torres, Lehnert and Kyla Daniel each had one.
Black and Hicks scored three runs while Moriel, Villa, Lehnert and Bewley scored two and Daniel, Sarabia, Kaci Webb and Torres one.
Tim Scherwin, the team’s first-year coach, said he hoped Friday’s game will produce a good home crowd for Sweetwater.
The Lady Mustangs will come in with a 9-10 overall record and are currently at 2-2 in district as they get ready to start the second half of district play.
