Sweetwater sixth grade band earns all ones

On Friday, May 4, 2012, the Sweetwater sixth grade band followed in the footsteps of the middle school and high school band as they came home with superior ratings at the Clyde Invitational Band Festival."This is an exciting moment," explained director Ross Grant. "This is these student's first-ever contest performance. They perform on an unfamiliar stage before three adjudicators. It is a great opportunity for them to put their new skills to the test. The kids must focus in and do their best."The band's contest pieces were "Pirate's Cave" by Michael Story and "Westwind Overture" by Anne McGinty.Judge Michael Lunney said in his written critique, "Very nice tone qualities and attention to tuning throughout the band. Solid tempo by the percussion. What a great playing group. You sound much older than you are!"Judge George Mayo added, "You are playing with style and phrasing - unusual for a first year group!"Judge Joe Macbetha commented, "Great overall sound and balance. Every section is executing your notes and rhythms very accurately."The band performed Thursday evening at the Sweetwater Independent School District Annual Spring Concert at Sweetwater High School. The Band performed "Rockin' Robin," "The Loco-Motion," "The SMS Fight Song" and a special percussion feature.On Friday, May 11, 2012, the band will perform again for all Sweetwater Intermediate School fifth graders, in a special demonstration concert. Fifth graders will be invited to come back to Sweetwater Middle School on Monday evening, May 14, to tryout instruments and join the band for the fall semester.
