Three area teams in 1st

Three area high school basketball teams are in first place in their districts after winning games Tuesday.The Blackwell boys are 4-0 in District 14-A, Divis-ion II after a 54-40 victory over Bronte. The Hornets were led by Matthew Lowry’s 20 points while improving to 9-3 for the season. Blackwell steadily built its advantage throughout the game, leading 5-2, 20-14 and 35-28 at the quarter breaks. Mason Magness added 11 points for the Hornets, who are tied with Water Valley for the lead in District 14-A. The teams will meet on Friday in Water Valley in a first-place showdown.Meanwhile, Highland and Roscoe’s girls remained in a tie for the lead in 13-A, Div-ision II at 2-0 after winning their games on Tuesday.Highland (16-2 overall) which came in ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, Division II, defeated Ira 68-39 while Roscoe (10-9 overall) beat Westbrook 27-19. Highland and Roscoe lead Ira and Hermleigh (1-1) by a game in the early 13-A, Division II standings, and will meet at Highland next Tuesday.Defending district champion Highland started slowly and trailed Ira by a point, 16-15, after the first quarter before dominating the final three periods of play. The Lady Hornets were paced by Sierra Allen’s 22 points while Sydny Helbert had 19 and Beth Richburg 11.Roscoe was involved in a defensive struggle but still led 6-2, 14-10 and 17-16 at the breaks before winning the fourth period 10-3 to claim a more comfortable win. The Plowgirls were led by Eva Aguayo’s 14 points.Roscoe, which also got five points from Sam Orte-ga, hosts Ira in a key game on Friday. Highland, mean-while, is assured of remaining unbeaten in 13-A, Divi-sion II because Friday’s opponent, Loraine, has for-feited its season and is playing only a JV schedule.As a result, Highland will host the Abilene Hawks, a home school team, at 5 p.m. Friday in non-district. Highland’s JV girls will be hosting Loraine’s JV girls at 8 p.m. Friday.
