After two practices and two scrimmages, the 2018 volleyball season will begin Monday for Sweetwater.
The Lady Mustangs host Denver City at 6 p.m., then host Brownwood Tuesday with tipoff also at 6 p.m.
Four all-district players — seniors Charity Thompson, Shavie Green and Hannah Mobley and junior Elli Lehnert — are back after a 2017 season where a young Sweetwater squad that had little varsity experience still reached the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year before losing to Burkburnett in the bi-district round.
Morgan Doyle, who is entering her second year as the head coach, will try to get her players ready for a new district (5-4A) that no longer includes last year’s top two teams, Wylie and Brownwood, following the bi-annual realignment back in February. They are replaced by Greenwood and Lake View, with Snyder and Big Spring remaining in the new district.
This year’s roster also includes another letterman, junior Marissa Villanueva, as well as seniors Maria Chavez, Nikki Gutierrez and Bri Moriel and sophomores Mia Valdez and Kierstyn Thompson. Lehnert and Valdez will be the setters, with Mobley and Charity Thompson as outside hitters and Green and Kierstyn Thompson as middle blockers. Villanueva, Gutierrez and Chavez will be defensive specialists and Moriel will be the libero for the Lady Mustangs.
