Vela Hall Alexander Evans died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at Hendrick Hospice. Memorial graveside services will be held Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Restland Cemetery, in Gatesville, Texas. McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater, Texas is in charge of arrangements.She was 95 years old. She was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Coryell County, Texas. Her parents were Halbert Theon Hall and Alice Barbara Oxford Hall. After her mother’s death, Mr. Hall married Edna Faris from Abilene, Texas. They preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her older brother, Earl Oxford Hall, who went down in the Pacific Ocean during World War II.Ms. Evans grew up near Crawford, Texas, and graduated from Crawford High School. She attended Tarleton State College and graduated in 1936. She married William Riley (W.R.) Alexander April 18, 1937. They farmed in McLennan County until the government bought the farm for war purposes. They moved to Wastella Community north of Roscoe to farm in 1943. Mr. Alexander was killed in a farming accident in 1963. They had two daughters. Vela worked at Anthony’s Department Store in Sweetwater, Texas and the ASCS offices in Colorado City and Sweetwater from 1957 to 1968. She was then appointed Postmaster of Roscoe, Texas by Omar Burleson. She worked there until 1974 when she married Herbert S. Evans the same year. They lived in Friona, Marion, and New Braunfels, Texas. Mr. Evans passed away in June, 1995. In December, 1995 Ms. Evans moved back to Roscoe and in 2001 she moved to assisted living, The Hoyt House, in Sweetwater. She resided there for nearly 11 years.Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Ostlund of Sweetwater and Virginia Williams and husband Larry of Roscoe; one sister, Mrs. Edna Beth Beckelhymer and husband Roy of Austin, TX, and one brother, Halbert Weldon Hall and wife, Betty, of Bryan, Texas; two step sons, Jim Evans of Yelapa, Mexico and Carl Evans of San Antonio, Texas; two step daughters, Elna Morton and husband Larry of Erie, PA. and Nancy Matz and husband Jack, of McKinney, Texas; four grandchildren, Amanda Williams of Belton, Texas, Stacey Williams Kelley of Keller, Texas, Christy Williams Fairey and husband Mac of Moody, Texas and Jeremy Williams and wife Brandi, of Keller, Texas; step grandchildren, Emily Evans of Odessa, TX, Laura Evans of Orlando Fla., Luke Evans and J.P. Evans of Fredericksburg, TX, Judy Muller of Wattsburg, PA, Martha Brady of Erie, PA, Catherine Shepherd of Houston, TX and Christina Matz of Magnolia, TX; six great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren; eight nieces, including three very close, dear nieces.
