The House approved a non-binding resolution requesting that Vice President Mike Pence remove President Donald J. Trump from office by invoking the 25th Amendment.
The vote on the resolution proceeded largely by party lines, passing 223-205, Democrats to Republicans, respectively. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, was the only Republican lawmaker to break ranks. The resolution turned out to be largely symbolic and more of a political statement to the president, as Pence made it clear prior to the vote that he had no intentions of invoking the 25th Amendment.
“I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution,” Pence said in a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, adding that invoking the amendment “would set a terrible precedent.”
Anticipating the vote, Democrats plan to impeach Trump on Wednesday. At least three Republicans said they would vote to impeach Trump.
