President Donald J. Trump has fired Pentagon Chief Mark Esper.
Trump announced the change by tweet.
Christopher Miller, the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center will be serving as acting secretary. This move side=stepped the department's number two, Deputy Defense Secretary David Norquist.
"Chis will do a GREAT job!" Trump tweeted. "Mark Esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service."
This is an unprecedented move, as outgoing presidents historically have kept Pentagon chiefs in place to preserve a sense of stability in national security and as to how such stability plays out on the world stage.
