Sweetwater will travel to Monahans for a key District 2-4A, Division II matchup today between the two long-time rivals that will help to decide the district’s No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
Both teams are 3-1 with one game left. Sweetwater will host Greenwood (2-2) to end the regular season and Monahans goes to Fort Stockton (1-3) for its finale.
Seminole took the No. 1 seed by beating Sweetwater 28-27 in overtime last week. If Sweetwater beats Monahans, the Mustangs may still have to beat Greenwood to be assured of the No. 2 berth if the Rangers defeat last-place Lamesa today.
In 4-2A, Division II, Roscoe (2-1) hosts Tahoka (1-2) after losing to Seagraves 42-19 last week to fall out of a tie for first place with Hamlin, which beat Tahoka 32-27 this past Friday.
If Roscoe wins today, it will set up a season-ending showdown at Hamlin (3-0) next week where a Roscoe win could force a tiebreaker to decide district seeding.
In 7-1A, D-II, Blackwell (2-0) clinched at least the No. 2 playoff berth with a 59-0 win over Trent. No other details were available at press time. Blackwell will travel to Highland (1-0) for a potential 7-1A, D-II title showdown next Thursday.
For that to happen, Highland must win at Loraine (0-1) today.
A 19-16 loss to Monahans last year led to Sweetwater running off six straight wins to reach the 4A, D-II state title game. Monahans got to the regional semifinals until losing to Seminole, which then lost to Sweetwater 38-14 in the quarterfinals.
After their loss to Monahans, the Mustangs rebounded to defeat Greenwood for the district’s No. 2 seed before making its longest playoff run in 31 years.
Roscoe was 4-2A’s No. 2 seed behind Hamlin and Seagraves was the No. 3 seed a year ago.
All three teams had long playoff runs, but Seagraves had the longest after defeating Roscoe 29-21 in the regional semis before losing the next week to Wellington in the state quarterfinals.
Hamlin advanced to the regional semifinals last year in Class 2A, D-II before it was defeated by Wellington.
