After paying a three-day visit to Abilene for Wylie’s Catclaw Classic tournament last week, the Sweetwater boys welcomed Class 5A Abilene Cooper to their gym on Tuesday for a non-district basketball game.
But the Cougars wore out their welcome very quickly, racing to a 21-point (30-9) lead at intermission before cruising to a 52-27 victory over the Mustangs.
Sweetwater (2-9) never led and never really got its offense untracked en route to a season-low total, failing to reach double figures until early in the third quarter on a J.L. Solis free throw.
Cooper’s lead stayed between 20 and 25 points after that as the Mustangs could not put together a run.
No player on either team scored in double figures but Cooper did get scoring from all 10 players. Sweetwater used 12 players, but five did not score.
Kiante McCoy, who had six points, finished as the Mustangs’ top scorer. Kobe Clark and J.L. Solis scored five points, Jackson Foster four, Tristan Longoria and Logan Wedin three and Ky Hoover one point.
Sweetwater also lost in its sub-varsity games as the JV fell 59-35 and the freshmen lost 59-15. “We’ve got a lot of work to do,” said coach Bryan Loera. “We’ve got to do better when we face a team like that.”
